Coconut coir is obtained from the coconut husk, which, through specific processing, is upcycled and transformed into a growing medium suitable for multiple crops. When discussing coconut coir substrates, it is worth specifying that they always consist of a blend made up of multiple components—all derived from coconut—but featuring different sizes and physical characteristics.

We can identify 3 main elements: Peat/Pith, Fiber, and Chips.

  • Peat or Pith represents the component with the smallest particle size; it plays a fundamental role in the hydration capacity and water retention of the coconut coir substrate.

  • Chips are the coarsest part of the coconut coir substrate blend, which is highly important as it provides structure to the medium.

  • Fiber represents the finest element and, due to its physical-structural characteristics, plays a decisive role in the capillary action of the coconut coir substrate.
